A Guilty Pleasure Playlist for Indie Lovers
For June, The Messy Life is featuring a spotlight showcase in place of our typical list of Messy Melodies for the month. The band of choice? Rainbow Kitten Surprise.
I discovered them a couple of months ago, and have been binging their albums ever since. By now, I’ve overplayed just about every publicly released song these guys have created. A rarity for me, and a sign that I have to share them with you.
Below are my top picks, followed by two honorable mentions.
BLACK AND WHITE - RAINBOW KITTEN SURPRISE
The softest song, it begins with a wistful warmth, wrapped in subtle distractions. Such a peaceful reminiscence, you almost overlook the sadness that sulks beneath the balance, haunting each lyric in the sweetest way.
Okay, okay, I won’t get married.
AMERICAN HERO - RAINBOW KITTEN SURPRISE
I’m not a patriotic person, but I’m glad the title didn’t dissuade me from giving this tune a listen. Beyond the lyrics, this song has a hulking weight to it - like there’s no room for overwhelm when you let the melody fill your mind. Definitely one of my favorites.
Heaven is a dream. Reality is fictional.
MOODY ORANGE - RAINBOW KITTEN SURPRISE
From their most recent album - How to: Find, Love, Freefall - Moody Orange is a tune that flows through you, changing often enough to hold your interest, while ensuring each element is well attuned. The lyrics play so nicely with each other, I’ve found myself reflexively holding my breath until the song ends.
Face in, Placate, Flake out - For miles, for mine, for I know - You could sell me on anything.
HOLY WAR - RAINBOW KITTEN SURPRISE
Ease your mind, and let go to resonance of Holy War. The whiny opening threatens to crumple in on itself, but the beat kicks in and soothes that threat away. An easy pick up, you amble along, until KA-BOOM. Blow out.
Make way for the revolution.
SHAMEFUL COMPANY - RAINBOW KITTEN SURPRISE
This is a more easygoing song. It doesn’t ask for much beyond a bit of company. Overall, a pleasurable listen, it’s relaxing with an almost palpable emotional tug that forces you to rest in limbo as you attend to the tune.
Fair is a weather condition.
FAIL! - RAINBOW KITTEN SURPRISE
Pick up your wits and run with Fail! Here at The Messy Life, we’re all about a good mistake. Use this tune as inspiration to fail hard, fail fast, and learn faster.
Never thought that I'd be this age And fail so soon.
COCAINE JESUS - RAINBOW KITTEN SURPRISE
Cocaine Jesus is one of the first Rainbow Kitten Surprise songs that I grew to love. It’s filled with life, the pulse reminding me to get out of my head and create memories for myself. Live a little & love a lot.
Writing this, I’ve realize that a lot of these songs are about drugs.
COLD LOVE - RAINBOW KITTEN SURPRISE
As good as their latest album is, the band’s self-titled album from 2015 - RKS - has an unbeatable sound. The songs on this album all have a lively undercurrent that’s charged with undeniable soul.
Like any other song about selfish devotion, Cold Love deserves a proper listen.
It's second nature to love you, but it's first to die.
WASTED - RAINBOW KITTEN SURPRISE
Head bopping, arm swinging, body moving goodness. Another selfish love song, I’m exposing my aberrant personal brand.
You're black ice on the road on a drunken summer night.
MR. REDUNDANT - RAINBOW KITTEN SURPRISE
Do you know in films where people are at a concert or social event and a song comes on that completely recharges the mood? Enough to compel everyone to come together and embrace the energy with a cacophony of misspoken lyrics and offbeat dance moves. Ya, those scenes seem fake to me too.
However, if this were to happen in real life, then Mr. Redundant would be that song. It’s such a fun listen and I wish upon a star that someday I’m lucky enough to create one of those magical scenes in real life.
As I’ve mentioned in a previous playlist, it would definitely be a memory for the books.
Life called to say Hello.
Finishing up the playlist, Seven & Possum Queen are two songs I’ve been enjoying recently. I overplayed RKS and as soon as How to: Find, Love, Freefall came out, I blew through that too, but of course there will always be songs that are overlooked. These are finally getting their second chance listens.
Rainbow Kitten Surprise is a charm. Their music makes you feel real. It’s fresh, full-bodied, and together their voices combine to create a sound so warm, it gives me chills.
Hope you enjoy this showcase! If you like what you hear, then give the rest of their songs a listen. Stay tuned to next month. I plan on releasing a proper summer playlist, which of course promises anything but.
